R-14 lost fuel on 12 May 22 and rigged blankets (6 3 long 2 wide) between scopes and proceeded at 2 knots to Hilo, HW 15 May 22. 
She lasted the war and was decommissioned 7 May 45

Something in the back of my mind tells me that the recovery ship sent to tow her back to port never arrived, and was eventually found on the bottom near the Farallon Islands off of San Francisco.
Does anyone else remember anything about this? I'm probably wrong on this, but, ...

Ric Hedman (PigBoats.COM) and I have written a complete history of this incident. We hope to get it published this year. The book not only examines the incident itself, but takes a look at the how and why. Chester Nimitz was the Division CO at the time and he played a key role in the aftermath.
