Thomas Michael Dykers (Tom), 90, of Scottsdale, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 24, 2021, in Tempe, Arizona.

Tom was born on January 8, 1931, in Savannah, GA, to Thomas Michael and Margaret Frances (Tydings) Dykers. He travelled broadly throughout his life as he was born into a naval family and carried on in his father’s footsteps in his own adulthood.  Tom graduated from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD in 1952 and completed further training in Submarine School and in Naval Intelligence School.  He met Karla Jean Hanseman, a dental hygienist from Mondovi, WI, in Port Hueneme, CA in the summer of 1956 and they married that winter and worked, travelled, raised a family, and retired together for 64 years.

During his years in the Navy, Tom rose to the rank of Commander and served as the well‑respected commanding officer of the USS Perch from 1965 to 1967, for which he received the Navy Commendation Medal and multiple service medals. He also served many alternating tours of duty in the Pentagon, working in Naval Intelligence and went on to attain a Master of Science degree in Systems Management, with a special interest in the then fledgling world of computer science. After retiring from the Navy in 1972, Tom applied his leadership and organizational skills to new endeavors in the business world, where he founded two companies, the American Inventory Company and Post-Marketing, both of which provided computer services to other businesses. In the mid-1980s, Tom went on to become the comptroller for a law firm based in Seattle before formally retiring.

Tom and Karla had homes in California, Hawaii, Washington DC, Virginia, South Carolina, The Philippine Islands, Washington, Oregon, and Arizona. Together, they travelled throughout the world, experiencing many adventures, and forging lasting friendships. They played tennis, golf, and entertained and Tom went on to serve as the president of the Central Park Tennis Club in Kirkland, WA from 1980-1981. He was a car buff and loved to buy and sell cars, delving deeply into the latest car tests for the technical information to lead him to the next shiny purchase. Tom was a natural mathematician, geographer, and teacher and placed a high value on education and critical thinking. He was very proud of his two daughters and encouraged all around him to reach high to achieve their best.

He is survived by his wife, Karla Hanseman Dykers of Seattle, WA; two daughters, Tracy Dykers Wrey (Michael James Wrey) of Seattle, WA, and Kathryn Dykers Colgan (Michael James Colgan) of Bainbridge Island, WA; sister, Blair Dykers Bryan of Lovell, Wyoming; and 3 grandchildren (Madelaine Claire Wrey, Robyn Ciel Wrey, and Theodore Roan Colgan).

Services will be held privately.
