Shipmates,
It is with great sadness that I report the passing of a legend in our Brotherhood of Submariners, our
Shipmate VADM John H. Nicholson, USN (Retired) on November 7, 2020. VADM Nicholson qualified on
USS Tiru SS-416 in 1950. He also served on USS Nautilus SSN-571 (Plank Owner), USS Skate SSN-578,
USS Pickerel SS-524 (Commanding Officer), USS Sargo SSN-583 (Commanding Officer), and USS
Stonewall Jackson SSBN-634 Blue (Commissioning Commanding Officer). VADM Nicholson also served
as Commander, Submarine Squadron FIFTEEN and Commander Submarine Group EIGHT/Commander
Submarines Mediterranean.
VADM Nicholson was a Life Member of both USSVI and San Diego Base, and a member of the Holland
Club.
